Oktoberfest is traditionally a celebration that takes place in Munich in Germany every year. It was originally created to honour the royal wedding of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxony-hildburghausen. Today it is an event that is celebrated in numerous countries outside of Germany, but who knew Jamaica was one of those!
Not known to many, Jamaica’s history as a German settlement dates back to the 1770s. Oktoberfest in Jamaica is an event which has been organised by the Jamaica German Society in Kingston for over 35 years. The society aims to promote German culture and language in Jamaica. While their sister company, the German-Jamaica society promotes Jamaican culture in Germany! People gather to enjoy a whole host of German dishes and often offers over 10 types of authentic German beer (as well as Jamaican beer). The festival includes lively Jamaica-German music along with games, beer-drinking competitions and the opportunity to win all types of prizes.
