Joel Abati developed his love for handball in his home country, Martinique. He played for Espoir de Floreal in Martinique and then joined Saint-Michel Sports in 1990. Abati went on to play for many French teams and in 1997 he moved to Germany to play for SC Magdeburg. With them he won the German Championship in 2001, the Champions League in 2002 and the EHF Cup 3 times (1999, 2001, 2007). Joel Abati was elected the best right-back of the German Championship in 2004 and was registered in the Hall of Fame of the German Club in 2007.
Having played 10 seasons in Germany, Abati returned to the French Championship with Montpellier Agglomeration Handball for 2 seasons. With them he won 2 French league titles, 2 Coupe de France and 1 League Cup.
Joel Abati played for his French national team for 14 years. He gained 204 caps and scored 585 goals. In 2001 he won the World Championships in France. They won the 2006 European Championships and in 2008 the team won the gold medal at the Beijing Olympics. Following this victory, Joel Abati was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour.
In 2009, Abati retired from the sport and took up Politics. He was elected to the Regional-Council of Languedoc-Roussillon in March 2010.
