Better known to his close friends and family as Efrén, Benton moved to the States in his 20s. He worked as a drummer and a backup singer to well-known artists such as Billy Ocean and Tom Jones. Dave Benton was a contestant at the 1981 OTI Festival (Ibero-American equivalent of the Eurovision contest) held in Mexico City. He represented the Netherlands Antilles with the song “Vaya un amigo” as Efrén Benita.
Dave Benton eventually settled with his wife in Estonia in 1997. Benton release and produced quite a few albums, one of which was in his native tongue, Papiamento. Dave Benton can also speak seven other languages: English, Spanish, Dutch, French, German, Portuguese, and Estonian. In 2001 Benton became the 1st black man to win the Eurovision Song Contest with budding Estonian rock singer Tanel Padar and boyband 2XL.
In 2010, Dave Benton took part in Dancing with the Stars as a celebrity contestant. He also performed in the German production of the musical ‘City Lights’.

Dave Benton continues to have a successful music career. He has been a guitarist and songwriter for LVL UP, a Brooklyn based rock band, since 2011. Benton is a diverse musician and producer and is loved in his native island, Aruba. His performances are always full of emotion and he is always positive.
